Flight Simulator Forums > Flight Simulator News > Flight Simulator X Announcement at CES
Posted by: Jon Jan 4 2006, 10:27 PM
I have transcribed the announcement made by Microsoft just a few minutes ago at CES 2006. Notice a few key pieces of information that I have typed in bold.
"Microsoft Flight Simulator has been around now for over 20 years! Every time the PC has improved in its performance, its capability, its graphics ability - MSFS has really been there to take advantage of those opportunites. I've brought with me a sneak preview of the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator. It's a really immersive environment that's being led by Windows Vista graphics and the next generation of DirectX. You can see the realism of the reflection...I'm actually going to drive...try to drive...with my XBox 360 controller plugged directly into my Windows Vista PC. You can really start to see the smoke from the boat..the independent and kind of live light that you see with the waves...with some of the birds and the trees that you'll start to see. This is the immersive environment that people expect from PC gaming with the next generation of Windows PCs...Windows Vista really starts to deliver. [flys by island in the sim] Off the west coast of Maui, it's not a bad place to be. The game developers actually have a little bit more than a year to continue working on the product, so the final product is going to be even better. But one thing's for sure, gaming is going to be awesome on Windows Vista."

| omg.... I just died.... Now I need to save for the new dual core system..... LOL or maybe microsoft decided to make the sim more efficient.....
Posted by: PiP Jan 4 2006, 11:58 PM
| looks like an uprated FS2004 to me. Hope theres more to it than that?
But looking at some og those shots - other than the water textures - I've seen Mango take better shots with his payware on FS9!
Lol Some financial company beat you to the address Jon
Posted by: Jon Jan 5 2006, 12:05 AM
Yeah, by about 7 years. Not to worry, http://www.flightsimx.com is accounted for.
Posted by: VHHH90 Jan 5 2006, 12:49 AM
Truely looks spectacular!
Posted by: kewlceo Jan 5 2006, 12:53 AM
Good work on the domain name, Jon & Brad.
Posted by: Paramedic Jan 5 2006, 01:19 AM
| Well, to play that game I'll have to buy a new computer, a $500 operating system and throw my payware to the garbage. Wow.
But I have to admit that FSX should be cool
Posted by: Jon Jan 5 2006, 01:21 AM
Microsoft is making FSX backward compatible with most FS9 payware.
Posted by: Paramedic Jan 5 2006, 01:30 AM
But that thing about the $500 OS is still there. I hope there will be a version for XP users.
Posted by: Jon Jan 5 2006, 01:31 AM
Well, FSX will be compatible with Windows XP, but is optimized for Windows Vista and DirectX 10.
Posted by: Dennis_k Jan 5 2006, 02:20 AM
Sweet! I hope i can beta test this one
Posted by: Paramedic Jan 5 2006, 02:21 AM
Just thought of my relative who works at Microsoft in Seattle, I'll just give him a call, he pays about 5-10% of the retail price on everything, when those come out I'll send him some money to get Vista and FSX.
Posted by: C172pilot Jan 5 2006, 02:27 AM
| then pay that much in shipping making it the same as the listed price(or so) LOL.. but hey, that's awesome man.
FSX looks great from now. Maybe it's just me, but that looks like it's just a scenery enhancer.. I'll save my comments for later when I see more previews. (aircraft etc..)
Posted by: Robin. Jan 5 2006, 02:56 AM
| Vista won't cost $500 for us, there are about 10 different versions and the one the average user would use would probably be around $150.
FSX looks awesome
Posted by: Mango Jan 5 2006, 03:43 AM
Thanks Pip, but you have to imagine that those are global shots without an addon. That's absolute awesome ! I'm sure the effects and realism on a good system will be incredible.
Way to go Bill, way to go... Let them work 24/7 !
Posted by: Fsimfan Jan 5 2006, 04:05 AM
| Visually, there are improvememts. The textures across the board are more varied and better. The trees are a lot more denser now, and forests look like forests instead of a sparse collection of twigs.
"A little bit more than a year to continue working...". Does that mean 2007 then? In any case, can't wait to see what the additional improvements will be!
Posted by: Halmex Jan 5 2006, 06:04 AM
| I hope dx10 will bring some new features.
100% framte rate with that kind of scenery would be nice.

The ninja assasins are on their way.
On a lighter note, the scenery looks amazing!
I think a new generation PC in sync with FSX is the way to go.
Man I've been flying fs since green screens, it's hard to believe its come this far.
Great great news!
Posted by: THE AVIATOR Jan 6 2006, 05:39 PM
Man fsx looks awesome! If that's next generation gaming I'm gonna need a new pc to welcome it!
What's green screens?
Posted by: G-BSCA Jan 7 2006, 05:18 AM
| Lol, thats great! That autogen placement is amazing. Can't wait for this to come out!
Aviator, back in the very first days of FS, the runways just used to be placed in the midle of a green grid, lol. No trees or anything, just black for filling and green for outlines, lol.
Posted by: Sensationalizer Jan 7 2006, 07:45 AM
| Thank you ! Sensational!
i just got a new PC i hope FSX won't go hard on it.
Posted by: captain-trig Jan 7 2006, 09:35 AM
| Will Direct X 10 be on the fsx disk??
Funny how they didn't stick to fs2006!?!?
I suppose it will be around 60 quid then?
Posted by: LEVT_FL350 Jan 7 2006, 11:58 AM
Woaaaaa, just amazing. But ######, I have no money even to take the driving test so I guess that I won't have to buy even more RAM. That suskcs... I'll stick to FS9 then...
Posted by: BrianF Jan 8 2006, 04:36 PM
Well 1 things for sure, it sucks FSX.com is taken, but Brad and Jon got fs2006.com a while ago...

Posted by: ricochetv1 Jan 9 2006, 02:41 PM
| What I'd like to see in the new version, for the most part, are improvements to the ATC, including smarter ground direction so not sitting in the middle of a taxiway for 30 minutes waiting to be given the go-ahead again.
Also, add emergency handling (in other words, if you tune your xponder to 7700, the ATC window automatically shows mayday calls, and if you have to land outside the airport, they have responses like, "We show you have reached ground level. Are you OK?" and things like that) and enhanced approach control, including holding patterns, etc.
Oh, and if you stop responding and your altitude is dropping, they announce Onguard and such. Doesn't really do much, but it sounds more realistic.
Also, include an option to support controller-assigned SID and STAR.
The ATC has always been a weak-point in the program. Let's boost it up!
Posted by: ricochetv1 Jan 9 2006, 02:46 PM
Do you remember playing FS in black-n-white? Or did you use FS that long ago?
I remember it. hehe
######, I remember when they introduced the Learjet and that was a HUGE thing!
Posted by: rabbitweasel Jan 10 2006, 10:37 PM
Are those shots rendered with directx 10 or directx 9? I was wondering for a short while. It can't be entirely finished especially with the weather looking the way it does now. Micro$oft said that clouds would be improved with shadows too. But is what is shown rendred in directx 10?
Posted by: Boeing Airliner Jan 13 2006, 03:38 AM
| I'm shocked that you guys didn't recognise this but : Fs9 ( Fs2004 )>> FsX (Fs2006)
See X is a roman numeral for 10
Posted by: Dennis_k Jan 13 2006, 04:41 AM
This is my opinion also....
Sure the graffics are also important, but with the addons there are around now FS2004 looks good.
The main setback of fs2004 (for me) is the ATC. I never get the feeling that its an intelligent part of FS. There's no interaction what so ever. ATC just responces to you aircraft (or its location). Esp. when landing with AI close to you, the only responce you get is a go arround, and this happens when the AI plane has landed.
Conflicting AI never gets on other direction. The only thing you hear is something like 737 1 nm @ 1 o'clock.
Those two (ATC and AI) are the point's where i would like to see improvment.
Posted by: N3123V Jan 13 2006, 10:41 PM
I agree, the AI system is certainly a downfall, it is not very realistic, along with the ATC, especially at GA airports. I once had an AI caravan pull out onto a runway at a non-towered field just as I had announced that I was on final. It would be neat if FSX would come with a headset and voice recog. but I doubt that Microsoft would do that. But the ATC could most definetly use much improvement.

SCENERY BLURR!! Bye Bye!
Posted by: simo_x35 Jan 17 2006, 09:43 PM
Awesome preview ,cant wait anymore ... I was thinking to update my computer in the next months , after seen this i think i will wait till the next winter !
Posted by: kenair744 Apr 11 2006, 02:16 AM
| When IS the "release" date AND how much will it cost and what are the requriements?
Posted by: bobby_macnair Apr 11 2006, 04:25 AM
will be released at the end of the year and will cost about that same as it always has. the price has never fluctuated that much.
Posted by: fssimmer Apr 13 2006, 08:23 PM
I would love to see improvments in the realism of ATC. Such as realistic departure and approach procedures, better spacing between AI planes, and I really really really hope they get rid of the "crossing runways" thing from FS2004. Another thing is letting us choose which runways certain planes land on based upon size, livery, and arrival direction. These upgrades would make me never want to leave my computer!!!!!!!
Posted by: KLM SEA-AMS Apr 13 2006, 08:31 PM
I must actually say that I am not really looking forward to the new version of Flight Simulator because I am worried that all the add-ons that we have purchased over the years and have come to love will not be compatible with the new product from Microsoft. Let's just hope that I am wrong. I think that Flight Simulator 2004 still has a lot of life left in it.
Posted by: kenair744 Apr 13 2006, 09:24 PM
Didn't Brad say that it will be backwards compatible?
Posted by: Montie Apr 14 2006, 08:45 AM
The developers are doing their best to make it compatible with the current FS2004 addons. They are testing with various addons for FS2004, only payware from what I've read.
Posted by: kenair744 Apr 14 2006, 09:46 AM
I hope so .... because with the current addons; I had to fix my hard drive a few times and it takes me over 3 hours just to complete ALL the addons... not to mention needing a big hard dive
