Flight Simulator Forums > Flight Simulator News > FS2004.com - Looking Forward

As many of you already know, the new year will be bringing many welcome changes to this community. Up until now we have been fairly quiet about the details, but with the arrival of the new year we think it's time everyone was given a peek at some of the upcoming changes.

First and foremost we will be migrating to a new domain that will better reflect our purpose as a flight simulation community. We will unveil the new domain name in the coming months.

Second, you will be seeing a new logo soon:

user posted image

And finally, here are a few more planned features to whet your appetite - these have been in the works for the past year or so and will be rolled out individually over the next few months:
  • Migration to IPB 2.x (forum software upgrade)
  • FS Videos to be moved out of the file library (Downloads) and into their own section with an interface much like Google Video and other popular video interfaces that we are all familiar with these days.
  • Optional premium membership program that will allow account upgrades such as ad removal, user profile enhancements, and more. Current features will not be reduced or removed for free accounts.
  • More features will be announced in the coming months.
This community has come a long way in the last 3 years, and you have yourselves to thank for that. These changes are being implemented in order to maintain our current progress and further our goal of providing the most enjoyable, informative, and immersive flight simulation community available.

Sounds very cool! I like the new logo and making the videos like google video will be awesome

Posted by: experimental_pilot Jan 2 2007, 01:38 AM
Video section is a great idea!
Hopefully, Video quality and size won't be messed with though.

Great biggrin.gif! Any news on the knowledge base? I remember fox suggested a Wiki a while ago...tongue.gif

Great news! I just saw this, I agree a lot that this forum has progressed in very large steps!

I only have a few thoughts no and then that worry me to some extent.

~When we do the forum software upgrade the forum will be down for a good 4 hours. When done will be expect all the topics to be in their order as we left them? Or will each forum's topics be trimmed to zero and all the topic and posts be moved into the search database?

~As far as ad removal goes that's a huge plus for our IE users, but for many of us FireFox users including me have adblock, flashblock, and JSBlock running and no ads show up. I don't mean to intrude on that fact.

~Will the member panel contain a option to put the account into invisible mode when signing in? Instead of having to click the little tick at sign in?

~Not a question but I digg the new logo. Reminds me of an airline logo I've seen before or a travel agency.

GOOD WORK!

Sorry to add, but on the forum I used to mod on before I stepped down. Paid supporters got to see the forums graveyard and were able to post in the topics as the mods had the ability to do the same thing also. Just and idea.

Posted by: Ben. Jan 2 2007, 06:58 AM
What's the point of having a graveyard if every Tom, Dick and Harry can see it?

Posted by: radioactive_ham Jan 2 2007, 09:54 AM
this is looking great!! will we still use ore current profiles and nicknames?? or will it all be new?

This is something we've discussed - we'll give it some more thought. smile.gif

We will definitely be placing more emphasis on the KB, but a wiki is not currently on the roadmap.

QUOTE

Other than looking at a new interface and having more features, you'll not notice anything different with the forum content. We will likely be archiving very old content at some point in the future, but not during this migration.

QUOTE

I believe IPB 2.x adds this feature.

There will be private discussion areas for supporters, but I don't forsee the Graveyard being one of them.

QUOTE

Yes, all forum content (posts, post counts, member titles, etc) will remain unchanged.

Posted by: 3ckpilot Jan 2 2007, 02:59 PM
What if we are able to see graveyard topics that we created?

What will premium membership cost BTW?

Posted by: Brad Jan 2 2007, 05:05 PM
Graveyard access is not currently in the cards at all.

Premium membership will be very reasonable - its main purpose being to merely offset the opportunity costs associated with removing advertisements.

Posted by: SwitchFX Jan 2 2007, 07:11 PM
Sounds great, but you forgot to respond to the ads question. I would guess about 65 percent of the users here use firefox.

All those ad blocking, flash blocking, and JSblocking extensions just get rid of the ads. I understand that the rest of th majority use IE or Opera. IE doesn't have a adblock feature stock but I have seen and used upgrades for it by 3rd party companies. I'm not sure with opera's browser.

What would happen at that point?

Posted by: 3ckpilot Jan 2 2007, 09:23 PM
Will extended post editing time be part of a paying package (maybe 1 hour for paying and the average 20 minutes for free acounts)?

Posted by: Ben. Jan 2 2007, 09:43 PM
Yeah that'd be very good,

Posted by: Sea Bass Jan 2 2007, 11:05 PM

That would be a very nice addition which will help to decide for a membership as well. I guess FS2004.com (or the coming domain name) would be the first FS site to offer such a service ? smile.gif cool.gif

You never asked a question. Here's what you said (a statement, best I can figure):

Thanks for Clarifying Rick,

My question is what the purpose of the ad removal would be if it's a benefit to IE users only?

I second that. A multi-player server will be a a good idea!!We need to get full advantage of all that FSX has!! The new multiplayer interface is awesome..

One last question..Is the site going to be down while you guys work out the new interface??

Why not? Apparently nothing is going to change if you don't decide to buy it and it's entirely optional.

Memberships.... paying maybe not the best thing IMO but then again it does help out the owners a little. This has always been a free forum anyway so i don't get why change it... cool.gif I guess like Posky's donation system hey?

Correct, nothing will be different for free members. We'll not be taking any features away from free members, and we'll still be adding new site features as always for free members, and the world will still continue to spin for free members.

Premium members will have the added benefit of special features that we could not financially give to everybody (more space for PM's, content in place of ads, etc).

A new domain, yes, but we're keeping the domain FS2004.com, so if you rather type "FS2004.com" you'll still be redirected automatically to the new name.

All accounts, post counts, PM's, etc will be saved. The new forums will look and feel nearly identical but with the addition of new features.

Posted by: killer2oo6 Jan 4 2007, 10:53 PM
Will premium membership have to be payed monthly / yearly etc or just a one-off payment?

--Ben.

Posted by: Brad Jan 5 2007, 01:13 PM
Yes, Paypal will be an option and we will likely offer annual plans.

There are certainly alot of questions surrounding this particular feature.

Posted by: bumbulbi Jan 5 2007, 04:40 PM
Oh sad.gif

I was hoping it would be a one time fee. I don't like paying annually.

Plus, if people buy premium membership, under their avatars, it should say, premium member or something.

Also, I think there should be two membership options.

1. High Flyer Membership
2. Gold Flyer Membership

the first would be cheaper, but less features.

Posted by: SwitchFX Jan 5 2007, 05:06 PM
This isn't airliners.net Bulbi wink.gif

An annual fee of 10 dollars USD Brad? Sounds great, will larger sigs be one of the features?

Posted by: Jon Jan 5 2007, 05:10 PM
We won't be able to settle on a price until we firm up our feature list and calculate our annual cost for those features. Larger sigs aren't currently on the list.

Posted by: Maverick90 Jan 5 2007, 05:13 PM
When will the change happen? mellow.gif

Posted by: Jon Jan 5 2007, 05:21 PM
Hard to say, but I think we can knock it out by mid-February, maybe sooner if all goes well.

Posted by: SwitchFX Jan 5 2007, 06:56 PM

feels like the end of an era. i remember back when the site was first made. the poll on the homepage for "what do you think of the site"... man thatt feels like such a long time ago!

im also kinda dasappointed that i was one of the few from the start, but never have really made an individual impact on the site... maybe this is a new begining for me.

I think the whole subscription thing will just separate members into two classified groups like an upper class and lower class and I don't like the idea of that hmm.gif But I love the new logo, and it just shows that the new site design will look much cooler and much more modern! I also love the google video idea. However it would also be cool if you held your own VA system, so people can file their flight etc, and people can have REAL stats like airliner pilot depending on how many hours they file cool.gif

However it would also be cool if you held your own VA system, so people can file their flight etc, and people can have REAL stats like airliner pilot depending on how many hours they file  cool.gif

I'm not too keen on the subscription thing either hmm.gif Probably to do with the fact that I might subscribe but probably won't be able to laugh.gif tongue.gif

laugh.gif unsure.gif

That makes no sense. And also why I'm having espresso at 1 AM laugh.gif

Because, you found a thread on fs2004.com that you want to read, in it's 30-something page entirety. laugh.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif

I need to cut back on that junk.

But what 30 pages? I've got 4 pages for this topic. blink.gif

I was kidding...

Thought so, than I thought you must have adjusted the number of posts per page. Go figure. By the end of this month it would be at 30 laugh.gif

Still jumping the gun a abit though aren't you? How can we be 2 weeks from mid Feb when it's not even Feb yet. wink.gif

Regardless, we're still on track with our initial projections and should meet our goal of 1st quarter this year.

Have we got about 2 more weeks to go until we do the upgrade?

Edit- removed nonsense comment. Replaced with important ?

Wanted to ask a important question. Would you like it if I could create a avatar pack? I've been looking at avatar sites for ipb 2.0 + and haven't found one at all. If so what flavor would you like them in ?

All one has to do is create a home page and then create links to the /forums folder. The new home page will look like http://www.fs2004.com but updated.

Posted by: SwitchFX Feb 5 2007, 08:07 PM
No I didn't mean that Rick. I'm fully aware of how to get forum content to "stream" on the home page. I meant what he AKA Brad do to substitute the IPB 2.0 + PERSONAL portals. It's just a bit way too much if you ask me.

One of the aquaria forums I visit have been using 2.0 plus since it came out. Although ther personal portal crap is gone. They made it similar to this version of IPB. They didn't skin it though.

OIC.

The Personal Portal can be reverted to "classic style" in the ACP.

Posted by: SwitchFX Feb 5 2007, 08:35 PM
Oh I see.

However I figure OIC is a shorter way of saying it.

BTW I requested a 12 hour trial. This just better be than vb or I'm getting another lease.

EDIT:

I'm very impressed with the IPB 2.0+ environment. Wow is all I have to say. Everything is neatly layed out.

They're recreating the silver theme for 2.2.x, but I don't think additional skins are in the works. FWIW, its's a real pain. Let's say you have a light and a dark theme? For the dark theme you have to edit all 200+ IPB images, plus the smilies, etc. I've done it and can attest to the hassle.

Not to mention that some modifications would require being installed on all themes; but that doesn't take an immense amount of time for possibly 2 themes.

Then just don't use a light and dark theme. Use two light themes, etc.

Use two light themes, etc.

yes.gif A light blue would be nice. Not as dark as the stock theme though.

Blue themes are not so good. I say keep with the same grey layout that centralised biggrin.gif

You see where the PM and Email options are? I meant that color since it has a blue hue to it.

I wouldn't mind the gray theme so much if it weren't so bland. Possibly add some shine and bevel to it?

I like the looks right now. Although I think they are putting shine and bevel. This forum has changed a lot since Aug 2003. Back then I was a visitor. I joined on the last day of 2003.

Back than we had only 4 sections of a forum. This site's come a long way.

Posted by: kewlceo Feb 18 2007, 12:39 PM
It will be nice. The colors are very easy on the eyes, and as for the comment about 'bland' I don't think that will be the case at all. The styling of 2.2.x is fresh, has many more buttons, new features, etc. I'm looking forward to it.

Hopefully people understand how to use the multiple quote function.

Posted by: coffeebeans Feb 18 2007, 12:51 PM
I'd think it'd look very nice if the colors weren't so monotone, a few gradients would look nice.

The multiple quote thing is easy and nice once you know how to use it.

Think of the new forum skin as FS2004.com v2.0 - and yes it has an extra gradient here and there.

It's because the button name is "Quote+" which leads users of early versions of IPB to think it's the same as the standard "Quote" button here.

It's a "MutliQuote" button, since it allows you to click on a number of posts and include them all, nicely formatted with each original poster's name, etc.

Thank you Mr. Secretary

@ CoffeeBeans: A template/skin that has to many variants of the same color is annoying. Dark themes aren't that as they seem to be. However as Brad said gradients will be done, I would expect them to be where the darker grays are now on this site?

They've been at this for a good year and it's worth waiting another 2 weeks or more needed. As Jon said they are trying to optimize the site both software and hardware wise.

I've got a guesstimate date circled on my office desk mat calender.

Posted by: coffeebeans Feb 18 2007, 03:57 PM
You guys are thinking that want drastic changes, vibrant colors all around, this that and the other. All I would like to see if just some things to spice it up, the current monotone colors get kinda boring.

@Coffee: No one thinks you wanted drastic changes. Neither do I, usually websites that change way too much are annoying. The only thing I wish they did was hide a link somewhere where someone would accidentally click it and it would take them to a preview. They did that once IIRC.

Just came to my mind:

People will be able to do multiple quotes successfully now due to the Quote + button.

I see this a lot

And they ask why it doesn't work.

Anyway, back on topic; I'm looking forward to the migration, and I agree with coffee, some gradients and stuff would be nice, but the basic foundation for this theme shouldn't change because as Rick said, it's very easy on the eyes yes.gif

Rick: Thanks for explaining the multiple quote thing to me, I never understood it on your forum tongue.gif blush.gif

Thanks wink.gif

Brad ..... just let me know how much for the premium membership and whether you want check, cash, money order, credit card, or PayPal. And congrats on the move. While the users can partake in the credit for this site becoming what it has, none of it would have happened without you guys putting in the time and effort to CREATE the site in the first place.

I asked for paypal early on. I would roughly assumed it would be 10-20 USD a year.
